Abstract

"The goal of the social mapping was to collect and consolidate data in order to create a social map of Western Province. Most provinces in the nation have produced district plans containing information that help to create a background to the social mapping. This is not the case with Western Province, and data on geography, demography, health, education and economy has never been consolidated. Thus the information given here stems from various sources, including the Department of Health, National Census and the social mapping teams.
The Western Province social mapping teams collected data through interviews with people in rural and urban communities and settlements, and in a few cases with health workers and teachers. This data helps construct a map of living conditions, people’s understanding of HIV/AIDS and aspects influencing the development of the disease. The data also should provide information on factors stopping people from taking HIV/AIDS prevention measures, risk behaviour other than sex work and work migration, and the impact of the HIV/AIDS campaign.

Information and data collected through the social mapping can assist NAC, Government Departments and other agents in their future planning on HIV/AIDS prevention strategies."
