National HIV/AIDS Support Project (NHASP)
Situational Analysis for Strategic Planning at District Level: National Capital District
Social Mapping Project
September 2004, 61 pp

"The goal of this project was to collect and consolidate data in order to create a social map of the National Capital District. Most provinces in the nation have produced district plans containing information that helps create a background to the social mapping. This is not the case with NCD, and data on geography, demography, health, education and economy has never been consolidated. Thus the information given here stems from various sources, including the social mapping teams with help from NCD PAC.

The NCD social mapping teams collected data through interviews with people in semi-rural and urban communities and settlements and with members of organisations and other groups. This data helps construct a map of living conditions, people’s understanding of HIV/AIDS and aspects influencing the development of the disease. The data should also provide information on factors stopping people from taking HIV/AIDS prevention measures, risk behaviours other than sex work and work migration, and the impact of the HIV/AIDS campaign.
The focus for this social mapping was National Capital District. A social map of Morobe Province has already been made. By constructing similar social maps of the remaining provinces in PNG, and by compiling existing and relevant data for each district, we will have a number of ‘portraits’ showing the situation in each district and, when taken together, the whole nation.

Information and data collected through the social mapping will assist NAC, Government Departments and other agents in their future planning of HIV/AIDS preventive strategies."
