National HIV/AIDS Support Project (NHASP)
Situational Analysis for Strategic Planning at District Level: Manus Province
Social Mapping Project
December 2004, 50 pp

"The goal of this project was to collect and consolidate data in order to create a social map of Manus Province based on information from various sources. The provincial District Plans contain a lot of information that is valuable to any future planning for HIV/AIDS prevention. However, several provinces in the nation, including Manus Province, have no District Plans. Information given under ‘Existing Data’ mainly stems from a newspaper article by the HRC for Manus PAC, information from the social mapping team, the National Census, Department of Health and data collected by the social mapping team through interviews with people in rural communities. This data helps construct a map of living conditions, people’s understanding of HIV/AIDS and aspects influencing the development of the disease. The data should also give information on factors stopping people from taking HIV/AIDS prevention measures, risk behaviour other than sex work and work migration, and the impact of the HIV/AIDS campaign.

The focus for this social mapping was Manus Province. Social maps have already been made on other provinces. By constructing similar social maps of the remaining provinces in PNG we will have a number of ‘portraits’ showing the situation in each district and when taken together, the whole nation.

Information and data collected through the social mapping will assist NAC, Government Departments and other agents in their future planning on HIV/AIDS preventive strategies."
