National HIV/AIDS Support Project (NHASP)
Situational Analysis for Strategic Planning at District Level: Bougainville Province
Social Mapping Project
December 2004, 68 pp

"The goal of this project was to collect and consolidate data in order to create a social map of Bougainville. Information was collected from various sources including the National Census, Department of Health and data collected by the social mapping teams through interviews with people in urban and rural communities. Most provinces in the nation have consolidated existing data in their District Plans which has been a great help for the reports. However, perhaps due to the crisis, there are no district plans available for Bougainville. Data on geography, demography, education, health, economy etc, except for information collected through the mapping, is missing. The little data available from existing sources together with the social mapping can still help us construct a map of living conditions as well as people’s understanding of HIV/AIDS and aspects influencing the development of the disease. The data should also provide information on factors impeding the adoption of HIV/AIDS prevention measures, risk behaviours other than sex work and work migration, and the impact of the HIV/AIDS campaign.

The focus for this social mapping was Bougainville. Social maps have already been made on other provinces. By constructing similar social maps of the remaining provinces in PNG we will have a number of ‘portraits’ showing the situation in each district and, when taken together, the whole nation. Information and data collected through the social mapping will assist NAC, Government Departments and other agents in their future planning on HIV/AIDS preventive strategies. It should be pointed out that this was the main focus of the social mapping teams."
