"In May 2000, a workshop was organised in Port Moresby by the National AIDS Council Secretariat and the Department of Health of Papua New Guinea, with the goal of bringing together epidemiological information on the occurrence of
HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections, and related social and behavioural factors. The report of the workshop subsequently became an important resource for those involved in Papua New Guinea’s response to HIV/AIDS. With the passage of four years, and the availability of new information,
the National AIDS Council Secretariat and the National Department of Health decided to hold a second workshop on the status of the HIV epidemic in Papua New Guinea."
