"This report has been prepared by the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific for governments and Member States of the Western Pacific Region and for the participants of the Workshop for STI and HIV/AIDS Programme Managers, Manila, Philippines, which was held from 29 September to 1 October 1999.The WHO Western Pacific Regional Office organized a three-day workshop for STI and HIV/AIDS programme managers to review the progress of STI and HIV/AIDS programmes in the region; to review the latest developments in STI and HIV/AIDS surveillance, prevention and care; to identify needs and future activities; to develop programme and management strategies; and to identify regional programme targets. The participants of the workshop discussed the past, present and future of HIV/AIDS; AIDS care; STI prevention and control; planning and target setting.Based on discussions in small groups, the participants of the workshop agreed on ten regional targets, addressing various aspects of policy development and programme management, including public education programmes; condom distribution and promotion; STI/HIV sentinel surveillance; STI syndromic case-management; AIDS care; blood safety; integration, monitoring and evaluation of programmes, and harm reduction programmes for injecting drug users."
