Abstract

"In recent years epidemiological evidence has shown that infections are increasing fastest among women, especially young women. In addition, the interconnectedness of HIV infection and the vulnerability of women due to traditional cultural and sexual roles must be addressed. This paper focuses on the ways in which HIV/AIDS affects men and women differently, highlighting that risks of contracting the virus differ for men and women, addresses gender-specific reasons for faster rates of female HIV/AIDS prevalence, and highlights features and experiences of HIV/AIDS in a few subregions. It also reviews effective strategies and concludes with recommendations. Being aware of the multi-dimensional nature of the pandemic and who is affected and how will, hopefully, enable policy makers and decision makers at all levels to plan interventions in a way so as to address the major factors which fuel the transmission of the virus and deaths due to AIDS."
