Abstract

"At the request of National AIDS Control Organisation, DFID India has been supporting the development of a nation wide HIV/STD prevention project among inter-city truck drivers, their crew and sexual partners in India. The approach focuses on prevention of HIV transmission through a three pronged strategy: supporting behaviour change for safer sexual behaviour, condom use and the treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). The technical thrust of the strategies reflects existing best practice. Behaviour change communication requires sound health education materials and good quality interpersonal communication. To reach an optimal number of primary stakeholders, it is essential that interpersonal communication is led by outreach workers. Building the capacity of partner organizations, especially their outreach staff, in effective communication will be an important determinant of projects success. This communication skill building manual has been developed to facilitate outreach workers to enhance their communication skills. The manual has been developed by those with on-the-ground experience for use by regional trainers. The manual is one of the key training tools developed by the project."
