- Abstract
"The GIPA initiative was an exciting, challenging, and highly rewarding project for all those involved. It was developed together with our HIV positive partner organisations, out of our shared recognition of the unique expertise that people living with HIV/AIDS bring to the fight against the epidemic, and our shared commitment to the full involvement of HIV positive people in every aspect of the response to HIV/AIDS. Global experience has shown that the success of HIV prevention and care and support initiatives depends on the meaningful participation of those infected and affected by the virus. However, there has been little progress in implementing the Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GIPA) Principles in South Asia, where the epidemic has so far been characterised by fear and ignorance, stigma and discrimination and an absence of care and support services. This environment has made it very difficult for HIV positive people to form strong organisations with the capacity to be fully involved in responses to the epidemic at all levels. "
