Abstract

"An estimated 38 million people globally were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2003, 7.4 million of whom were in the Asia Pacific region. As an organisation closely involved in the response to HIV/AIDS in Australia and New Zealand, ASHM shares concerns that the benefits and lessons learnt in terms of prevention, treatment and care be spread widely and quickly to deal with the world-wide epidemic.

"To promote further discussion and debate, ASHM has brought together experts with significant experience in the field to contribute to this new ASHM monograph. Their chapters consider epidemiology in the Asia Pacific region, the World Health Organization’s guidelines for treatment, maintaining a focus on prevention efforts, the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, trade negotiations and pricing mechanisms, and ethical and human rights issues."
